An introduction to the materials, techniques and concepts of oil painting. Emphasis is placed on painting from observation, the depiction light and shadow, and basic color theory. Process based painting and concept based abstraction are explored. Students will learn to recognize and use the tools and materials and nomenclature related to oil painting including supports and grounds, mediums, binders and brushes. The role of Painting in art history and in contemporary art will be examined. Prerequisite: ART 130 , ART 131 , ART 132 , ART 163 . Credit 3.
