An introduction to the Spanish language and Hispanic culture through conversation and basic grammar. Course Objectives (1) Define and translate assigned vocabulary (2) Use morphological and syntactic structures from each assigned chapter in conversational settings and on quizzes and exams (3) Demonstrate level-appropriate oral and written communication skills in Spanish in order to engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions (adapted from ACTFL Standard 1.1) (4) Translate short passages and compose short dialogues and passages (5) Identify and explain issues related to language variation and the nature of language in terms of syntactic, morphological, phonological, semantic and pragmatic differences (6) Discuss topics related to political, social and cultural issues and events in Spanish-speaking countries
