MET 215 - Thermodynamics

Institution:
Point Park University
Subject:
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY
Description:
Topics include the properties of ideal and imperfect gases and two-phase mixtures. All thermodynamics properties such as internal energy, entropy and enthalpy are defined and applied. The concepts of work and heat transfer are examined through a wide variety of problems. The first and second laws are covered from both system and control volume viewpoints, for static fluids and for fluids in motion. Refrigeration cycles, steam cycles and gas turbine cycles are covered in detail utilizing stream tables, gas tables, T-S and P-H diagrams. Course Objectives (1) Use the ideal gas law to calculate pressure, specific volume, mass or temperature of a gas from given properties. (2) Use the principle of reduced pressure and reduced temperature with Van der Waal's chart to find compatibility factor and analyze real gases. (3) Calculate work done during isobaric, isothermal, adiabatic and polytrophic expansion or compression (4) Use the first law of thermodynamics to calculate changes in internal energy, heat exchange and work (5) Analyze the vapor compression cycle (6) Analyze the Rankine cycle (7) Analyze the Brayton cycle
