435. History of the American West. Three semester hours. This course is a topical treatment of the history of American expansion and development in the trans-Mississippi region of the United States. Major issues covered in the course include the changing viewpoints of historians about the West, the nature of the frontier, and the region as a place rather than a process. Special attention will be given to the West's role as a meeting place of cultures, a region with a history of dependence upon the federal government, and a battleground between the forces of economic development and economic preservation.
