This one-semester course gives careful attention to a selection of foundational works in western literature, music, drama, art, and architecture. Readings include Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, Sophocles' Oedipus Rex, Virgil's Aeneid, selections from the Bible, Augustine's Confessions, and Dante's Inferno. Students also complete assignments based on the study of sites including war memorials, the Supreme Court, the U.S. Capitol, and the National Gallery. The course introduces students to ancient musical forms, early polyphony, and the origins of opera, and the class attends one dramatic or musical performance together. Enrollment is limited to first-year students, sophomores in the School of Music, and others with instructor's consent.
