Introduction to various styles of jazz from its beginnings at the end of the 19th century to the 1940s. Beginning with the early years of ┐traditional┐ jazz in New Orleans and progressing chronologically, students will be introduced to major figures and styles of jazz through videos, recordings, readings and concerts. Includes study of the outside forces that helped shape the music and the musicians. Cross-listed as HUM 3317. Credit may not be earned for both.
