Description:

This course is an introduction to capitalism, as seen initially through the great works of political economy by Adam Smith, David Ricardo and Karl Marx. It presents their writings in a theoretical and social context, as well as in relation to modern economics. The curriculum then turns to the present and applies this foundation to an examination of economic crisis, labor exploitation, the profit motive and the role of the government under capitalism.
