A comparative understanding of the epic in its thematic, structural, and cultural aspects. Some of the major epics of India (Mahabharatha and Ramayana), as well as the Persian Book of Kings and Turkish oral epics, are studied in detail alongside the major epics of the Western tradition--Iliad, Odyssey, and Aeneid.
