Examines significant works representing realism, naturalism, modernism, and postmodernism in lite- rary technique and responding to the evolution and tensions of a multicultural society, including the labor, immigra- tion, civil rights, feminist, and lesbian-gay experiences. Authors may include Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, Henry James, Charles Chesnutt, W.E.B. Du Bois, Sui Sin Far, Willa Cather, Edith Wharton, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Richard Wright, Ten- nessee Williams, Ralph Ellison, Gary Soto, August Wilson, Oscar Hijuelos, Louise Erdrich, Toni Morrison, Auidre Lorde, Thorn Gunn, and others.
