This course examines the transformation of the United States from a society based in production to one predicated on consumption . Using historical documents like the writings of Jefferson and Hamilton, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Henry Ford, and Edward Filene, and analyzing contemporary material such as advertising campaigns and political debates, we will explore how this change has altered our very notions of identity, democracy and citizenship.
