This course examines development economics and development policy. The purpose is to understand the lives of the poor and the economies of poor countries to determine what can be done to improve their lives. We will examine various theories of economic inequity with emphasis on what changes might occur to promote development as well as what might be constraining the poor. We will use different methods to evaluate the effects of a policy or program and to evaluate our knowledge of poverty. Students will write a paper which considers the reasoning behind a particular program to help the poor.
