Capstone is a guided group and individual research course that each year is aimed at a different environmental topic of global significance. Past topics have included the regulation of biotechnology, using ecosystem services to create financial incentives for conservation, the social equity and biological effectiveness of private land conservation, and the national choices facing China with respect to agricultural policy. The course begins with lectures so that students gain a foundational background for the quarters research topic. Students write individual papers, group papers, give oral presentations, and develop project management skills. Some students pursue their research after the course, even to the point of publication.
