This is an advanced course offered in the Addiction Studies Track. The focus of this course is working with clients with co-occurring disorders and relapse prevention strategies. The 12 core functions of a substance abuse counselor continue to be discussed. Stage wise treatment and the use of Motivational Interviewing strategies and skills are explored and practiced. Students develop a treatment/relapse prevention plan, discharge plans and consider the impact of co-occurring disorders. Community resources, case management needs and appropriate referrals are discussed. Students complete necessary documents needed for chemical dependency licensure. Professional, legal and ethical dilemmas are considered. This course must be completed with a ā€œCā€ or higher.
