This course is offered in the Addiction Studies Track. Various strategies and approaches to the assessment and treatment of addictions, recognition of signs and symptoms, treatment interventions and levels of care are explored. The 12 core functions of a substance abuse counselor are woven throughout the course. Students integrate classroom learning with associated field practicum to complete a bio-psychosocial assessment, identification of client stage of change, diagnostic summary and didactic presentation with clients with substance use disorders. Students deepen their experience and understanding of utilizing community support groups. The OCDP code of ethics is utilized to review common ethical situations. Licensed individuals with active involvement with clients with substance use disorders may be eligible to take this course for licensure renewal pending approval from lead instructor. This course must be completed with a ā€œCā€ or higher.
