This introductory course focuses on the development of basic interviewing, rapport building, and active listening skills for the beginning student. Confidentiality and its meaning in the field of human services is also explored. The student gains a beginning understanding of the process and principles in establishing effective helping relationships using attending behaviors, effective questioning, empathy, and self-awareness. Students are also exposed to the skills needed to effectively evaluate themselves following a simulated active listening session. This course must be completed with a āCā or higher.
