The medical record, in manual or electronic form, houses the medical information that describes all aspects of patient care and also serves to protect the legal interests of the patient, health care provider, and health care facility. The medical assistant is responsible for the organization of a records management system for patient files, correspondence, financial records, equipment manuals, and all other necessary business documents. Students will not only examine the purpose and content of various medical records but also learn how to develop an efficient records management system for the filing, retrieval, transferring, protection, retention, storage, and destruction of a variety of patient records in the health care field. (Usually offered Fall semester only.) Prerequisite: OFT 121 Prerequisite/Co-requisite: OFT 153
