Description:
This is a lecture and discussion course on the role of the arts, literature, and philosophy in Greek and Roman society. The Classical heritage is central to Western Civilization, but has also directly influenced the cultures of the Near East and India as well. Students will view examples of Classical Art (architecture, sculpture, painting, etc.) and learn about the roles played by the artwork and the artist in Classical Culture. Students will also absorb the flavor of ancient Greece and Rome by learning about the philosophy, literature, and theatre of the times. The influence of Clssical Culture on later periods in Western Civilization, including our own, will be examined as well. (Usually offered Spring semester.)
