Description:

This supervised clinical laboratory course focuses on building competency in utilization of nursing knowledge and skills taught in Mental Health Nursing for Practical Nursing (LPNU 132NR) and other pre-requisite and co-requisite courses. Laboratory assignments focus on caring for institutionalized patients with alterations in mental health and the application of theoretical knowledge in the management of various mental health alterations. Students interact with patients on a one to one basis and in group situations. Each student follows one patient throughout the clinical course and comletes a comprehensive nursing care plan, including revisions in care based on patient progress. Students continue to participate in their own clinical performance evaluation and are encouraged to seek clinical experiences to enhance individual learning. To provide meaningful clinical supervision and learning, a ratio of 1 instructor to no more than 10 students is maintained.
