This course provides an overview of major trends and figures in the history of American intellectuals from the end of the Civil War to the present. Topics covered include: pragmatism; the emergence of professional social science; differing reactions to the growth of a corporate-dominated mass production and mass consumption society; intellectuals' involvement with radical and reform movements from progressivism to the New Left; the efforts of intellectuals to theorize ethnic and racial diversity and discrimination; reactions to mass culture; and postmodernism.
