In this class we examine the sociopolitical change and religious movements from Safavid Persia to present day Iran. We discuss the process of institutionalization of Shi'ism in Iran during the Safavid period and the reasons for the fall of the Safavid Empire. For the Qajar period, we focus on the increasing contact between Qajar Iran and the Western powers; the introduction of ideas of constitutionalism and Western forms of schooling; as well as the debates that surrounded such contacts with the West.
