This seminar addresses the rich and complex history of ethnicity in China. How did different ethnic groups come into being in China? How has ethnicity been defined and labeled? How did different ethnic groups interact with each other? How does the state influence ethnic identity? What is the role of ethnicity in politics? Through analyzing these questions, this course seeks to help students understand ethnicity in Chinese history and develop the ability to think, write, and talk about relevant issues in a critical and compelling manner.
