An overview of the natural and cultural history of the Pioneer Valley through reading, discussion, museum visits, and field trips. The course is structured around thematic field trips that will explore the relationships between the environment, societies' interactions with that environment, and personal experience in an attempt to answer the question, "What makes the pioneer Valley a unique place?" Connections will also be made between the local region and the larger global contxt as they have evolved over time. Students read a variety of supporting material as a basis for field trips, discussion and written responses. Prereq: Placement beyond or satisfactory completion of COL 090 and ENG 090
