A sociological focus on the structure and role of the family including the impact of culture, age, gender, and class in the contemporary United States. The course investigates the significance of social forces, attitudes and policies on the structure of the family. Students learn about the relationship between the family and other institutions in society. The course focuses on an understanding of historical shifts in household organization and family behavior in the U.S., including recent controversial topics regarding how contemporary United States society defines a family.
