Explores anthropological research on sex and sexuality, focusing in particular on alternative or queer sexualities. The course explores the construction of sexual identities and sexual (sub)cultures throughout history and across cultures through the holistic anthropological four-field approach. The four fields of anthropology (cultural, physical, linguistic anthropology and archaeology) offer unique perspectives on and tools to investigate sexuality and sexual identities. This course examines topics through each of these four approaches. The course explores the complex interrelationships between sexuality and other identities including gender, race/ethnicity, class, nationality and age. In particular the course explores the political implications of this research and examines how groups and individuals have worked and may work against structural oppression.
