An examination of the problem of black/white racial conflict in important American texts. The course examines representations of blackness and whiteness, and situates them within historical moments that have defined surges in writing about race: the coming of the Civil War, the failure of reconstruction and the establishment of the color line, and the rise of Pan-Africanism as a matrix for the development of an autonomous African-American cultural consciousness. Offered in alternate years.
