Introduces the mapping sciences with a primary focus on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Covers the history, structure, uses, hardware and software requirements, and basic operations of GIS. Examines the use of other goegraphic technologies (mapping, ariel photography, remote sensing, and global positioning systems) as they relate to GIS use. Through hands-on projects and case studies, this course illustrates concepts and applications of GIS, with emphasis on applications in environmental science and issues of the Gulf coast region.
