Prerequisite: HLTH 2100 or HLTH 1238 In this introductory ICD-9-CM coding class, students will learn the history and structure of the ICD-9-CM medical classification system that is used to describe and report diagnoses and procedures. Students will attain basic ICD-9-CM coding skills in order to apply this coding system in a variety of provider settings and develop an understanding of the impact these codes have on provider reimbursement, internal reporting, and statistical and quality reporting needs within the healthcare industry. Students will also explore other classification and vocabulary systems such as DSM-IV, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and SNOMED-CT. (5 contact hours: 2 lecture, 3 lab)
