Strongly recommended: READ 099 if required by reading placement exam or if required by reading level. This course is designed to assist students in becoming more effective teachers of individuals from backgrounds other than their own. Included is an examination of concepts of culture, ethnicity, gender, sex, prejudice and discrimination and an analysis of the appropriateness of current educational theories relating to a diverse society. Emphasis will be given to increasing understanding of subcultures based on race, ethnicity, age, religion, gender, language, family background and income. The development of bias free curriculum models, methods and philosophies will be examined. 54 lecture hours.
