An introduction to the computable issues in biology. Assignments will focus on gaining competency in the use of bioinformatics applications, algorithm design, Perl programming, protein structure modeling, and genome annotation. Topics will include fundamental biological, mathematical and algorithmic models underlying bioinformatics; sequence analysis, database search, gene prediction, molecular structure comparison and prediction, phylogenetic trees, high throughput biology, massive datasets; applications in molecular biology and genetics; use and extension of common bioinformatics tools. Prerequisites: BIOL 1406, BIOL 1407, and either COSC 2336, and COSC 3304 Offered: Spring (odd numbered years)
