Prerequisite: COMD 220 and COMD 281 and COMD 282 and COMD 290 This course is designed to provide communication disorders students who already have an understanding of the normal language acquisition process with an overview of the field of linguistics. The universal properties and systematic aspects of languages will be explored. The students will develop their meta-linguistic awareness through discussion of language variation, attitudes about language, language contact and diversity, language change, and visual languages. Application of this information to the speech-language pathologist’s role in the language acquisition process and in clinical treatment of language disorders and language differences will be addressed. Offered summer session.
