This course introduces the student to the essential competencies necessary to provide primary health care to clients of diverse populations. The course addresses the history-taking process with an emphasis on communication strategies. Students engage in study that will assist them in understanding the developmental and cultural needs of clients as they relate to the delivery of primary health care. Theories and conceptual models from nursing and related disciplines are integrated. The cognitive processes underlying diagnostic and clinical decision-making are introduced. Common health issues encountered in primary care are presented in case studies where students implement the process of clinical decision-making. Prerequisites: NURS 404 and SHS 570; Corequisites: NURS 560A (2 credits)
