Masterpieces of Chinese Traditional Literature? surveys the most influential works of poetry and fiction ever produced in China and translated into English. Not only are they essential reading for anyone interested in Chinese culture, indeed they count among the most enduring works of world literature. Beginning from the canonical Classic of Poetry, close reading of poems from this and other collections, such as Songs of the South, the Nineteen Old Poems, farmstead and landscape poetry, Tang Dynasty ?shi? poetry, Song Dynasty song lyric poetry, will reveal the poems? secret symbolism and highlight traditional Chinese poetic devices. Works of fiction will include short classical and vernacular stories, tales of the strange, chuanqi and, as representative of the novel, an abridged version of Journey to the West (read Monkey King) will be read.
