Focusing on the literature of early American settlement, the literature that first defined our nation. Students analyze such works as oral literature of Native America, earliest writings of Spanish explorers, Puritan settlement literature, Captivity Narratives of the 17th through 19th centuries, Witchcraft Narratives, and Slave Narratives. Students might also study connections to later works (e.g., Puritan literature and Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter, Witchcraft narratives and Miller's The Crucible). Graded: Graded Student. Units: 3.0
