Prerequisites: SPA 302 or permission of instructor. Exploration of Caribbean music and its relationship to other musical traditions of Latin America and North America, focusing exclusively on the Hispanic context. The course examines both the aesthetic and sociocultural contexts of this music and includes discussion of diverse musical forms as well as issues of identity, gender, race and social class that have impacted the production and reception of this music.
