Calculus-based survey of principles of optics, and of the early conceptual advances in 20th-century physics: the Bohr atom, quantum theory, relativity, nuclear physics and elementary particles. Every semester. Lecture 3 hours, laboratory 2 hours. Prerequisites: ENGR 1030 and ENGR 1040, or PHYS 1030/PHYS 1030L and PHYS 1040/PHYS 1040L, or PHYS 2300/PHYS 2300L; MATH 1910/MATH 1911, MATH 1920/MATH 1921, or approval of the department head. Corequisite: PHYS 2320L laboratory, or approval of the head of the department.
