This course will be a study of the concept of race from the viewpoint of physical and cultural anthropology. Biology and culture focus on race and its effects in three main areas: historical, biological, and cultural. The concept of race is traced from its historical roots in the conquest era through its near-universal acceptance the last 200 years. The biology of human variation explains human differences and similarities, disclaiming race as an objective biological reality. Note: Offered beginning Spring 2011.
