Description:
-
Using Northern Ireland as the primary case study, this class will investigate several issues including the relationship between history and collective memory, the construction of ethnicity and tradition, and the politics of culture and identity in divided societies. Several forms of expressive and material culture will serve as our windows into these issues in general and into Northern Irish society in particular. These forms include commemorative parades, folk song and narrative, and political artwork such as graffiti and street murals.
