Prerequisite: At least sophomore standing or permission of the instructor. The goal of the seminar is to discern the social and political implications of Ralph Ellison’s conception of America. Students read his classic novel, Invisible Man (1952), as well as many of his other works of fiction and non-fiction, as a way to examine the American Dream in the context of the gap between American political principle and practice.
