Selected studies in music with a focus on history and culture, non-classical genres, ethnomusicological topics, or performance. May be repeated for degree credit with permission and if the topics are different. Topic for Spring 2011: MUS 296: Spring-Term Topic in Music: Maestro! (4): Open to all students: An in-depth study exploring the 400-year history and development of orchestral conducting. Students learn to read and follow a simple orchestral score, study the historical development of this special form of non-verbal communication, and carry on in-depth research of the great maestros of the past and present. Leonard Bernstein is highlighted. Field trips to several out of town professional orchestra concerts are an integral part of the class. (HA) Kolman. Spring 2011 and alternate years
