Prerequisites: Junior standing and approval of the Shenandoah editor. An apprenticeship in editing for one or more students each 12-week term with the editor of Shenandoah, Washington and Lee’s literary magazine. Students are instructed in and assist in these facets of the editor’s work: evaluation of manuscripts, proofreading/copyediting, the arrangement of work within an issue, selection of cover art, composing contributor’s notes, responding to queries, and issuing news releases. Interns also work toward an understanding of the role of journals in contemporary literature. May be applied once to the English major or Creative Writing Minor and repeated for a maximum of six additional elective credits, as long as the specific projects undertaken are different. R. T. Smith.
