CLAS 180 - FS: First-Year Seminar

Institution:
Washington and Lee University
Subject:
Classics
Description:
Prerequisite: First-year standing Topic for Fall 2010: CLAS 180: FS: Love and Grief in Ancient Greece and Rome (3). First-year seminar. This seminar is designed as an introduction to the field of classics via a problem of general interest: how do we recognize, examine, describe, express, or otherwise deal with the related emotions of love and grief. We can gain insight into our own ways of dealing with love and grief by the examination of the approaches taken in other cultures–in this case, the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome. We approach the subject through a variety of media, both literary and material. The course is divided into segments, each focusing on a particular kind of source for the study of classics. (HL) D.
