Emphasis on understanding the sometimes conflicting goals of the criminal justice system; attention is given to the general categories of general and specific deterrence, aggressive enforcement, situational and environmental defensive measures, and modification of the social order. Special attention will be given to how other countries control crime and the problems of comparison because of political and cultural differences.
