Elementary Arabic is a two-semester, sequential humanities course designed to develop the beginning language skills of listening, reading, speaking, and writing as well as an awareness of multiple Arabic-speaking cultures. Using the textbooks and multi-media program of Alif Baa and Al Kitaab, students will first become acquainted with the Arabic alphabet and script while also learning basic vocabulary items. Emphasis will then switch to developing a basic, beginning level of communicative competence in Modern Standard Arabic. Secondary emphasis will be given to developing an acquaintance with dialectal varieties of Arabic such as Egyptian, Gulf and Iraqi. DVDs included with the textbooks will provide authentic materials for lab and classroom activities.
