An introduction to film style and aesthetics with a focus on developing critical and formal analytical skills. Through readings and screenings of a broad range of films, the class examines the primary visual, aural, and narrative conventions by which motion pictures create and comment upon significant social experience. Issues of mise-en-scene, framing, image composition, photographic space, editing, sound, narrative structure, and point of view will be discussed as components of cinematic style and meaning.
