This course examines the application of modern NMR spectroscopic techniques to the structural elucidation of small molecules. Both the practical and theoretical aspects of 1D and 2D NMR experiments will be explored. Topics include: the chemical shift; coupling constants; the nuclear Overhauser effect and relaxation; chemical exchange; 2D homonuclear and heteronuclear correlation; analysis of complex molecules with overlapping signals and data tabulation; analysis of reactive intermediates; kinetics by NMR; the Fourtier transform; quadrature detection; phase-sensitive detection; the vector model; the density matrix and the product operator formalism; pulsed field gradients; and spectrometer instrumentation.
