This course will explore the moral and scientific underpinnings guiding the management of the oceans, exemplified by the large whales. Case studies focus on contemporary issues such as endangered species protection, over-harvesting and sustainable development. In particular, the course will show how genetic methods have been applied to inform the management of whales.
