In 9th-century England King Alfred instituted an unprecedented program of writing in Old English, in effect creating a literary tradition where none existed before. This course will introduce students to Alfred's life and times, along with readings from Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Bede's History of the English People, riddles, The Seafarer, and other Old English lyrics.
