This course is designed for principals and prospective principals to investigate the new leadership responsibilities that are emerging in the delivery of special education at the building level. The course reflects the emerging role of the principal in leading special education services at the school level with a two-part emphasis. Effective leadership involves (a) an ability to lead school-wide conversations about problems and issues that arise in special education in ways that strengthen the culture of the school and its commitment to all students’ learning; and (b) an ability to garner resources for the school’s programs. The course is not intended as an introduction to special education law or the details of special education administration, but a basic familiarity with these issues will be assumed.
