Expansive soils swell upon wetting because of the swelling nature of constituent clay minerals, particularly montmorillonite. This course studies swelling nature of different clay minerals, effects of wetting, swelling potential, swelling pressures, and design of different foundation systems. Prereq: CVEN 4738, B.S.C.E. or permission of instructor.
