Helping companies and communities become more socially and environmentally sustainable requires information and investment. This class introduces internal accounting techniques that aid companies in becoming more eco-efficient and external reporting to help investors value a company along social and environmental dimensions. How and when to report potential environmental liabilities and different models of sustainability reporting are also discussed. At the national level we examine alternative measures of GDP that better represent social and environmental aspects of the country. Markets can be powerful tools for change. We look at emissions trading, microfinance and socially responsible investing.
